Recently,
I started this blog and I wanted to get my editing in check. As I was reading
an article on editing I found something that made me go "hmm..." Low
and behold I find a typo in the midst of the paragraph out lining how sloppy
grammar can deter your readers and possible customers. Ironic? I think so.
Then
it got me thinking. It’s true! When I research products or services I’m
interested in purchasing I am completely turned off when I see typos or not so
pretty websites. I don’t know about you but I pick up on those. If they
haven’t invested time and effort into quality writing or advertising how much
do they put into their product or service?
I may
come off sounding harsh but this is just Keeping it Kait. It is about the
quality of work. If it isn't done in one place, it is most likely not done
anywhere else.
It
really just makes one look at the bigger picture, it may just be a typo on a
blog, and I’m not saying I’m Miss perfect but every detail counts. So needless
to say I’ll be reading and re-reading and proof reading this blog today before
posting.
I
also thought I’d add some of my own personal tips that have helped me so far:
1.
Do not, I repeat, do not edit immediately
after writing. All those crazy lines and perfect quotes are still running
through your mind and you will most likely miss any errors.
2.
Read your work out loud. It makes it easier
to catch where words and sentences don’t really run together well.
3.
Get someone else to proof read for you, many
eyes make grammatically correct writing…that’s how the saying goes right?
4.
Spell check is never 100 percent. Yes,
technology is pretty nifty but it hasn't evolved so far as determining the
right "their or "there" that goes with your sentence.
5.
Do not try to use lots of big words. You will
end up confusing yourself or confusing your reader. I used to go to the
thesaurus and stuff my writing full of adjectives. Simple is good. Simple holds
the reader’s attention.
